The Next Wave is a sea-going sail training ketch owned by Youth With A Mission (YWAM). The vessel serves YWAM in its efforts to raise up, train and disciple the next ‘wave’ of missionaries. This is achieved by equipping and releasing young people, and the young at heart, to work in many different types of community and missions projects around the world.

The Next Wave offers adventure, personal growth and a place to encounter God.
During each year the Next Wave hosts the lecture phase of a YWAM Discipleship Training School, short-term mission’s trips, as well as being the floating base for several months of YWAM community work.

We need new sails!
Over the last two years the Next Wave has been sailing in the Mediterranean. It was an amazing time! But all the sailing has left our sails worn out and damaged. This slows us down and increases fuel costs. With your help, we want to completely replace all five of the sails and make our operation more financially and environmentally sustainable.

How to help
Over the winter we want to raise £ 30,000 to buy the new set of sails. You can help us by sponsoring the Captain who is running the Marathon in Liverpool on the 31st of December this year. Check out our promo at www.sy-nextwave.com to see the preparations for that!

One evening, the YWAM leaders gathered for the 2011 Global Leadership Forum watched pictures of Al Akimoff, leader of YWAM Slavic Ministries, on a trip into Kamchatka, Russia. They watched Al in a thick Russian hat crusted with snow after a snowmobile ride to unreached peoples. They saw pictures of smiling men and women dressed in bright red, white and blue outfits from their tribal background. They heard that now some of the first individuals from these tribes have come to faith. In one area, pastors and church leaders trained in YWAM Discipleship Training Schools have started a church of 1,000. One of the tools to reach out to these tribes is a boat that navigates the rivers when they are not covered in ice. This boat is so new to YWAM it doesn’t even have a name yet. It sleeps seven. The crew pays their way partly by fishing as they travel.

The next morning, these pictures took on special meaning as the assembled leaders considered ship ministries within YWAM. Jesse Missa of Marine Reach explained that 80 percent of the world’s population lives within 100 kilometers of a navigable waterway. A ship can provide a platform for medical ministry, a place of training, and a home for workers. Jesse’s ministry alone provided over 7,000 dental surgeries in 2011 and ministered to 34,000 people. He said YWAM has a goal to operate 40 ships by 2020. He and others in YWAM ship ministries want to see three ships for Japan alone.

John Dawson recalled the leading of God in YWAM to create ship ministries as well as a university. He remembered the time in 1977 when two YWAM families had twins on the seventh month and the seventh day seven minutes apart. “This caught our attention,” John said. “These events within our family story were part of a prophetic confirmation that the birth of the university and the release of the Anastasis signified a family partnership between the siblings, in this case the University of the Nations and YWAM’s Ship Equipped Ministries. Over the years we began to see that there is a deep purpose that God has for this.”

The YWAM leaders commissioned an eldership for YWAM’s Ship Equipped Ministries: Jesse and Princessa Misa, Ken and Robin Mulligan, Brett and Karin Curtis, and Brian and Anne Sloan. They also took an offering for the medical ship Marine Reach New Zealand is trying to purchase for the Pacific Region. They have raised $300,000 toward the $1.2 million purchase price. The 47 leaders pledged a total of $12,000.

In the prayer and discussion, YWAM leaders expressed enthusiasm for the renewed emphasis on ships within the mission. This emphasis began way back in 1964, when Loren Cunningham led an outreach team in the Caribbean to help people suffering in the aftermath of a devastating hurricane. He had a sense from God that this small four-year-old organization would have a ship. Only a few months later, a man offered Loren a ship. In the prayer time now at the Global Leadership Forum in Tijuana, Christine Colby of the University of the Nations prayed, “Father, I thank your for mercy that you can again trust us with your dream. Help us steward this dream so it will look like what you intended for it.”

In other discussions, the Global Leadership Forum added the Middle East to the Central and South Asia Field, considered models for expansion, witnessed an offering taken in South Asia and given to Southern Sudan and pledged their involvement in Global Outreach Day.

The GLF also affirmed an addition to YWAM’s foundational values. The new value is “Communicate with Integrity” and states that, “YWAM affirms that everything exists because God communicates. Therefore, YWAM is committed to truthful, accurate, timely and relevant communication. We believe good communication is essential for strong relationships, healthy families, communities and effective ministry.”

The meeting ended with communion. The bonds of care that could be seen in painting crews on the first day of the meeting ended in words of blessing shared with each other. Said one leader from Nepal, “I appreciate being part of the eldership, how we emphasize family. We need family commitment and bonding with each other in order to move forward and grow.”

Article by Terje Konradsen, Chairman Northern Europe

As a young student in school I learned about “the rivers in Siberia”: Ob, Yenisey and Lena – three of the largest rivers on the planet. All three of them cut across the Siberian taiga and tundra and flood out into the Gulfs of the Arctic Ocean. Most of the year they are frozen and serve as ice-roads for motorized vehicles and snow mobiles. In Spring time they become alive again and boats and ships of all sorts and sizes go up and down the river.

Who are living by the shores of those mighty rivers? The “left-behind´s”. When globalization and urbanization had caught their “movers and shakers”, and sent them to the cities, often those with less resources and initiative were left behind. The factory moved to the city as well. Thousands of villages without any future, without hope. No maintenance. Left by themselves to die…..

This summer YWAM was able to buy a boat in Novosibirsk. The boat has beds for a crew of eight people. A small team of four from Kamchatka took it 2600 kilometer down the river to Salekhard, the administrative center of the Yamal Nenet Okrug. Over two weeks on the river, three Andrei´s and one Ivan kept on going to reach the first indigenous Christian conference for Finno-Ugric and Samojedic peoples in Yamal. Yamal means “the ends of the earth”. That´s where Jesus asked us to go and YWAM is already there.

What did they see by those river shores? Villages, villages, villages. One village man boasted and told Andrei, an Ukrainian YWAM´er from Petropavlovsk, that he had visited two other villages in his lifetime.

Siberia is as big as Europe, the continental USA and Alaska put together; an enormous landmass full of natural resources for the Russian government to fuel their economic development. But you will find people there too – let us not forget “the forgotten” in Siberia.

Nadjesta or Dar?

Since July, YWAM has a boat on the river of Ob in Siberia, ready to take teams into the heart of the Russian mainland. It will be based in Salekhard. The Good News Church, our partner in Yamal, looks after it and is already using it to reach out to the indigenous peoples in their area. Since we prayed for and consecrated the boat, two names have been suggested to identify it: “Nadjesta” which means “hope” – a common Russian female name. The other name suggested is”Dar” which means “gift” in Russian.

Our prayer is that this first YWAM ship in Siberia will be the beginning of a new fleet. YWAM Russia and YWAM Northern Europe are partnering to see a ship ministry be developed in both regions. We have started in the end of need. YWAM´ers in Northern Europe are praying to see the release of a bigger ship, and a crew, for service in between our Nordic and Baltic Capitals. From this bigger size ship we would be able to serve and equip smaller riverboats in Eastern Europe. These smaller riverboats will be able to reach “the old world” effectively. The Old World was developed and populated by people coming on the rivers to pioneer the land.

The Viking ship Project

I also learned in school about my forefathers; the Vikings. They used ships “to reach out to the world” as well; on the oceans in the west and on the rivers in the east. Next summer thousands of YWAMers are expected to attend outreaches during the Olympic Games in London, England. What could be a greater adventure than taking a group of young people in a Viking ship from Scandinavia to England? That is exactly what YWAM will do! This time only carrying spiritual weapons and the Message of Peace. No robberies or plundering!

A crew is coming together as well as a thousand young Mission Adventurers from YWAM Norway. BBC is interested in making a program about “the Vikings coming back…” and our own YWAM ship, the Next Wave from Marine Reach, will serve as the supply boat as we cross the North Sea.

Pray with us as we press on to obey the word of the Lord!

The New Maverick is getting ready for it’s cross country trip to the Call to All in Los Angeles. It will soon be loaded into it’s trailer and make it’s way from Coast to Coast where it will be one of the key features at the missions gathering. It’s the perfect poster-child for reaching the hard to get people around the world to be able to meet the needs of people both practically and spiritually. It’s the perfect companion to the YWAM Ships ministry as God’s heart beats for every individual as we are called to GO into all the world.

Flying Car Goes To Australia

You may have heard about Steve Saint’s Flying Car over at iTech in Florida and how YWAM is the first recipient of this innovative tool, which has an amazing dual purpose in Australia. The car will go on tour in Aussie and be used to call a generation of young people into missions and spark their imagination for how they can make a difference. Imagine the applications of this new technology amongst the remote villages and waterways in Papua New Guinea; transporting critical patients across the canopy to receive life-saving medical care, or medical professionals and educators transported into some of the most remote villages to empower and train PNG locals.

Here’s where you come in. We want to invite you to participate in a couple of ways in the final steps of the commissioning of the Flying Car to Australia and Papua New Guinea.

Firstly, you can come and see the car and some of the YWAM Townsville and YWAM Ships OC staff and be a part of the commissioning at the Call2All gathering in Los Angeles November 29 – December 3 2011 by registering at www.call2all.org

You can also participate by sending a tax deductible donation. We need to raise about $35,000 by Thanksgiving to put the Flying Car into a shipping container with spare parts and specialized portable dental chairs for ministering in PNG.

Chart Your Course – Training On Purpose!

If you have ever been intrigued with the thought of serving on board a missionary ship as a seaman or engineer? YWAM Ships has a pathway of training that might fit you perfectly. The first step is to get into a Discipleship Training School (DTS) which is the pre-requisite training for serving anywhere world wide in YWAM. It consists of 3 months of lecture and 2 months of feild experience. Then once you have graduated move from there on to our School of Navigation and Seamanship. This is 6 months. 3 months in Orange County, then 3 months on board the Next Wave in Eruope. If you wish to go further and enter officer training you can continue on for an additional 6 months. The SONS course will equip you with the necessary skills to be deployed on board one of our vessels and immediately be put to work serving either in the deck or engineering departments. These two courses fit together and flow naturally from the DTS into the SONS. For more information please contact registrar@ywamships.net or call +1 949 444 2131
