It’s the third one that has a story.

Eliana, Mitch and one of our translators, Eline, were out inviting people to our evangelistic movie night in the community of Trambioca. They spotted a papaya tree with ripe papayas and went to ask the owner if they could pick it. The owner, Solangie, was very hesitant to open the door, and simply nodded in approval. While trying to lean on the tree to pick the fruit, the base of the tree snapped, and the team propped it up with a stick. When they walked by later, the tree had come down with a crash, so the team went and apologized to the “Papaya Tree House” owner (Solangie), who asked them to come back the next day to hear about why we were here. At the movie that night, the children of that house came, but Solangie refused to come. While she was getting ready for bed, she felt like she needed to go and check on the kids at the movie. She came at the end of the movie and was moved by both the speaker and the translator, feeling like these “strangers” we’re much more like family.

The next day, the team stopped by the house that was very bare and met Solangie, her husband and their 5 children that were severely malnourished. As they shared with her family, they learned that this family was very poor and at one point, the husband was catching nothing (a fisherman by trade), she had had a stroke and they had nothing to eat, so she had tried to poison the whole family with a local root. However, a neighbor intervened, and she had felt a huge burden of shame and guilt for the past years. The team spoke encouragement, life, and specific words of knowledge over the family. The whole family ended up giving their lives to the Lord and were freed from the burdens of sin, guilt and shame.

They found out later that although many many missionaries had come by (including Jehovah’s Witnesses), our team that she had welcomed in. Her reason? Even from a distance, they seemed like the first ones that might actually have an answer and a hope for the lives of their family.

Lauren talked to a surfer for awhile and as she was sharing about some of the healings she had seen on her DTS lectures, the guy asked if she could pray for him. He had hurt his back a few days before surfing and was in pain.

She said, “yes”. He asked if she needed to use special words or do anything and she said, “No, I’ll just ask God to heal you.” So, she did and then asked him how his back felt and if he wanted to see how badly it hurt now. He moved his back around and he said that “I’m trying to make it hurt like before, but it doesn’t hurt at all any more.

Our direction is set for the next 3 quarters (June 2012 – March 2013). As we see what God is showing us for these next months, we are intrigued.

God is up to something that is rooted in the foundational years of YWAM with His call to establish universities & ships. One of the key words that has stayed with us over several decades is the call to be ‘twins’. Even now, we don’t understand all that God has meant in this word for YWAM, but we are feeling a resurgence of its importance as we have prayed into our next place of operation.

In Orange County last year, we were based out of a spacious home in Huntington Beach which we had outgrown by the time we left. From there we went on to start our training school on Catalina Island enjoying the quiet, wide open spaces, then onto the busy campus at Kona. Now teams are dispersing to various YWAM ship locations for outreach. Our goal has been to find a location in Orange County to continue growing once they all graduate. Several places have been options but none of them have seemed right. As we continued praying into ‘where’, we were surprised by what God indicated to us. We believe we are to continue in two places, both Orange County & Kona, for a longer season.

One of the reasons we sense the Lord is directing us to remain in Kona for a longer season relates to the twins concept mentioned earlier. Twins, as unique siblings, naturally have a deep relationship and when looking at them, they are often indistinguishable from each other. If God intends the UofN and ship ministries to resemble twins with characteristics that are identical, then developing together in this foundational season has great meaning for us as a ministry. There is a lot we can learn from the way UofN Kona has developed and operates.

So our next season is taking shape. Initially we have around 12 staff remaining in Orange County, with the rest returning to Kona to run our School of Navigation and Seamanship in June, then two Island Adventure DTS courses September 2012 and January 2013. All these schools have plans to spend time in both locations. So with staff moving back and forth, we remain committed to see our team grow in both places. Overall, we anticipate spending most of our time in Kona over these next 3 quarters and in the process we hope to learn together and discover more of what God has for universities and ships working together in YWAM.

Brett, Karen & Crew

Psalm 65:5 You answer us with awesome and righteous deeds, God our Savior, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas.

El Encuentro is a 50 foot ketch yacht built by Jim Pollard from Zeeland MI, USA and his Organization READY ABOUT. She was designed with the vision and purpose of training young people in the ways and disciplines of the sea and a perfect platform envisioned to have her student crew ministering in port cities around the world in discipleship and evangelism. El Encuentro is almost completed and close to being ready for deployment. Once her rigging, sails and a windlass anchor system has been installed she can be commissioned and on her maiden voyage.

How did YWAM come to receive such a gift? Jim who has become ill is unable to complete the final stages of her commissioning has generously donated the yacht to YWAM Ships. Worth $200,000 – $250,000 she will require $16,000 to ship across land from Michigan to California, then $38,000 to be completed.

This wonderful vessel, our first addition to YWAM Ships Orange County, will undergo completion in California and be deployed between Orange County, Catalina Island and Mexico. It is perfect the students of our YWAM course called the School of Navigation and Seamanship (SONS) – June 4th 2012. This vessel will be used for practicing skills learned in the classroom. She can then be used year round for outreaches in the region. Sleeping nine and carrying twenty five day passengers she is perfect for our needs. Our deep appreciation goes out to Jim Pollard and READY ABOUT INC for this most generous donation.

The SONS course is a second level school within the University of the Nations open to DTS graduates. However if you are interested in sitting in on a week or two of this school you are welcome. For the curriculum of the course click here. Contact us by emailing registrar@ywamships.net or going to www.ywamships.net/train/

Setting Sail in Europe, but we need your help!

The Next Wave is a sea-going sail training ketch owned by Youth With A Mission (YWAM). The vessel serves YWAM in its efforts to raise up, train and disciple the next ‘wave’ of missionaries. This is achieved by equipping and releasing young people, and the young at heart, to work in many different types of community and missions projects around the world.

The Next Wave offers adventure, personal growth and a place to encounter God.
During each year the Next Wave hosts the lecture phase of a YWAM Discipleship Training School, short-term mission’s trips, as well as being the floating base for several months of YWAM community work.

We need new sails!
Over the last two years the Next Wave has been sailing in the Mediterranean. It was an amazing time! But all the sailing has left our sails worn out and damaged. This slows us down and increases fuel costs. With your help, we want to completely replace all five of the sails and make our operation more financially and environmentally sustainable.

One evening, the YWAM leaders gathered for the 2011 Global Leadership Forum watched pictures of Al Akimoff, leader of YWAM Slavic Ministries, on a trip into Kamchatka, Russia. They watched Al in a thick Russian hat crusted with snow after a snowmobile ride to unreached peoples. They saw pictures of smiling men and women dressed in bright red, white and blue outfits from their tribal background. They heard that now some of the first individuals from these tribes have come to faith. In one area, pastors and church leaders trained in YWAM Discipleship Training Schools have started a church of 1,000. One of the tools to reach out to these tribes is a boat that navigates the rivers when they are not covered in ice. This boat is so new to YWAM it doesn’t even have a name yet. It sleeps seven. The crew pays their way partly by fishing as they travel.

The next morning, these pictures took on special meaning as the assembled leaders considered ship ministries within YWAM. Jesse Missa of Marine Reach explained that 80 percent of the world’s population lives within 100 kilometers of a navigable waterway. A ship can provide a platform for medical ministry, a place of training, and a home for workers. Jesse’s ministry alone provided over 7,000 dental surgeries in 2011 and ministered to 34,000 people. He said YWAM has a goal to operate 40 ships by 2020. He and others in YWAM ship ministries want to see three ships for Japan alone.

John Dawson recalled the leading of God in YWAM to create ship ministries as well as a university. He remembered the time in 1977 when two YWAM families had twins on the seventh month and the seventh day seven minutes apart. “This caught our attention,” John said. “These events within our family story were part of a prophetic confirmation that the birth of the university and the release of the Anastasis signified a family partnership between the siblings, in this case the University of the Nations and YWAM’s Ship Equipped Ministries. Over the years we began to see that there is a deep purpose that God has for this.”

The YWAM leaders commissioned an eldership for YWAM’s Ship Equipped Ministries: Jesse and Princessa Misa, Ken and Robin Mulligan, Brett and Karin Curtis, and Brian and Anne Sloan. They also took an offering for the medical ship Marine Reach New Zealand is trying to purchase for the Pacific Region. They have raised $300,000 toward the $1.2 million purchase price. The 47 leaders pledged a total of $12,000.

In the prayer and discussion, YWAM leaders expressed enthusiasm for the renewed emphasis on ships within the mission. This emphasis began way back in 1964, when Loren Cunningham led an outreach team in the Caribbean to help people suffering in the aftermath of a devastating hurricane. He had a sense from God that this small four-year-old organization would have a ship. Only a few months later, a man offered Loren a ship. In the prayer time now at the Global Leadership Forum in Tijuana, Christine Colby of the University of the Nations prayed, “Father, I thank your for mercy that you can again trust us with your dream. Help us steward this dream so it will look like what you intended for it.”

In other discussions, the Global Leadership Forum added the Middle East to the Central and South Asia Field, considered models for expansion, witnessed an offering taken in South Asia and given to Southern Sudan and pledged their involvement in Global Outreach Day.

The GLF also affirmed an addition to YWAM’s foundational values. The new value is “Communicate with Integrity” and states that, “YWAM affirms that everything exists because God communicates. Therefore, YWAM is committed to truthful, accurate, timely and relevant communication. We believe good communication is essential for strong relationships, healthy families, communities and effective ministry.”

The meeting ended with communion. The bonds of care that could be seen in painting crews on the first day of the meeting ended in words of blessing shared with each other. Said one leader from Nepal, “I appreciate being part of the eldership, how we emphasize family. We need family commitment and bonding with each other in order to move forward and grow.”
