“Just a short note to express a heartfelt THANK YOU for the awesome time Patti and I were able to spend with you. As volunteers we felt welcome and very much included in the PORT YWAM community. Serving the Great I AM alongside you all was truly inspirational.

Some of the highlights for us were:

  • Day-to-day contact with staff, serving together to accomplish the tasks associated with an exciting growing YWAM ministry.
  • Visiting and eating with the students…so special to be able to pray, share and hear about both their struggles and awesome accomplishments.
  • Being a part of “Dinner with Friends” (providing a meal for the homeless) on Monday nights.
  • Sitting in on a DTS lecture by Jonathan Spainhour.
  • Experiencing dynamic worship and hearing world-renowned speakers at the University of the Nations Kona campus.

The base location is amazing!!! We enjoyed beaches, boating, paddle boarding and snorkeling in the pristine Pacific Ocean right across the street. Watching the humpback whales and spinner dolphins from the huge deck where we ate many of our meals was truly unforgettable. It was also quite convenient to have wonderful seafood restaurants and coffee shops lining the street adjacent to the base. Being on The Big Island, our weekends were packed with a wide variety of outdoor activities including observing an active volcano and hiking to a tropical waterfall. Hawaii is stunningly beautiful!

“Glorious” and “memorable” are two words that describe our time with you. God is being honored in this place. His Kingdom is growing and lives are being dramatically changed as His Word is taught and taken out into the world through this ministry.”

I recently worked as a volunteer at the YWAM Ships base in downtown Kailua Kona, on the big island of Hawaii. My husband and I had signed on for a two month stint. This ministry had very recently (6 months prior) moved into an older hotel right in downtown Kona, just minutes from the pier. The hotel is very inviting with a sparkling pool in the middle of four buildings in a U shape. The first night we walked around Ali’i Drive in the balmy evening air. Later we were pleasantly surprised to find the bed really comfortable. The base has a family feel with the DTS students, the younger families of long term staff and volunteers of all ages.

The first day we were shown around the hotel and told where to report to work the following day and given some time to acclimatize. The hotel faces onto the main street for downtown Kona and is directly across the street from a rock wall separating the street from the ocean.

We saw dolphins jumping and even whales occasionally. I snorkeled and watched the dolphins swimming below even being able to see a baby nursing off its mom.

The maintenance work ranged from plumbing, electrical, laying flooring and doing basic carpentry work. I worked in the finance department and there are other opportunities in office work, kitchen, and hospitality, all of which I helped with during our time here.

Work and sleep all happen at the hotel, with that amazing view. It is a beautiful spot to have a vacation while serving at the same time. My husband enjoyed a dip in the ocean daily after work. The permanent staff and volunteers all have been great to work and worship with. We feel truly blessed to be part of such a valuable ministry.
