First Quarter – 1st week of June to 3rd week of August (12 weeks)

Week #1                   June 4-8

Topic(s):                   Definition of Terms and Identification of Parts of boats, Yachts and Ships, including its equipment.

Objectives:            Establish a Biblical foundation for Navigation & Seamanship

 

Week #2                   June 11-15

Topic(s):  Firefighting, Lifeboat handling, First Aid and Safety at Sea. Marline Spike Seamanship Introduction to Practical Seamanship.  Work onboard the ship.  Procedures for a Safe Work Environment.

Objectives:  Establish a Biblical foundation for Navigation & Seamanship

 

Week #3                   June 18-22

Topic(s):  Introduction to Navigation. Coordinates, chart work, lights, fixing positions, measurement of distance, speed & direction.

Objectives:  Establish a Biblical foundation for Navigation & Seamanship

 

Week #4                   June 25-29

Topic(s):  Navigation continued. The compass and its errors.  Electronic Navigation and introduction.  Meteorology.  Weather, pressure systems, barometer, winds, fronts, weather forecasting, weather fax interpretations.

Objectives:  Character development & discipline of Seamanship

 

Week #5                   July 2-6

Topic(s):  Oceanography.  Waves, currents, tides and it’s casues.  Boat Stability and Handling.

Objectives:  Character development & discipline of Seamanship

 

Week #6                   July 9-13

Topic(s):  Basic Engineering.  The engine, electrical properties, cooling system, etc..

Objectives:  Character development & discipline of Seamanship

 

Week #7                   July 16-20

Topic(s):  Buoyage Systems.  Local and foreign comparisons

Objectives:  Biographical and Historical Sketches

 

Week #8                   July 23-27

Topic(s):  International rules of the road.  Identification of vessels and collision avoidance.  Communications.  VHF, SSB Operations, international code of signals, Morse code, distress signals, EPIRB devices.

Week #9                   July 30 – August 3

Topic(s):  PADI dive certification

Objectives:  Biographical and Historical Sketches

 

Week #10                 July 6-10

Topic(s):  Survival At Sea, Man Overboard and other rescue techniques, search and rescue

Objectives:  Biographical and Historical Sketches

 

Week 11 and 12      August 13-24

Topic(s):  Review of the whole course and preparation for examination for qualified candidates for Boat Master Licensure Exams

Objectives:  Ensure understanding of previous materials with time to fill in any gaps missing
