Bibles and Healings – Brazil Outreach Team Stories
One of our outreach teams for our July Discipleship Training School course went to Brazil for two months. Here are a few of the stories that came out of their time in South America!
Our outreach focused on mainly building relationships with villagers by doing house visits. Although almost all the houses we visited believed in Jesus, a good majority did not know how to study his Word effectively. So our focus during the house visits was not only to get to know the people there but to also equip them to learn the Bible and how to study it. We were also distributing Bibles, SD cards with the Bible in their language, and audio boxes in order to play the audio Bibles through.
During one of our outreaches, we visited a house with a 66 year old woman, Maria, who had bad eyesight and couldn’t read the Bible. Although her husband read the Bible to her, and they would study it together she wanted to be able to have something to read while he was away at work. We gave Maria an audio Bible and showed her how to place the chip in her granddaughter’s tablet, then showed her how to play the chapters and she started to smile!
She was so happy with the audio Bible and being able to listen to the New Testament as well as watch the Jesus film (which was also on the SD card). It was amazing to see how we can equip people who are eager to learn more or seek more from the LORD and how they showed such gratefulness for the things we could do for them.
Another one of our house visits, we met a man whom had an “elephant” like leg. (possibly elephantiasis?). He said it was an infection he had in his leg that had been like that for a while; swollen, almost column shaped, hard, hot to the touch, and sore to walk on. We then prayed and quickly saw his leg not only start forming into the shape of a regular leg, but also became normal body temperature and soften up to the point where it was actually fleshy/squishy.
We kept praying and praying and after almost an hour we stopped. The leg did not fully heal but the prayers had made a significant difference. The man started smiling and was super happy so he got up, started lifting his hands to the LORD, and was walking around with no pain. We walked away knowing that it was not what we saw but what the LORD has done that we don’t see. As it says in 2 Corinthians 4:18 –
“As we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.”
During one of our rest days we went out for a team dinner to celebrate halfway through outreach. As we went out to dinner, a storm had rolled in and really started down pouring outside. We sat at our table the rain started coming down harder and harder, to the point where it started pouring through the roof.
As the roof started leaking we were staring at it, and one of us got up to try and ask if we can help somehow to fix it. Then the the girls on the team started to pray for the roof to stop leaking! Sure enough as the rain kept pelting down outside, the roof stopped leaking!
Like the Bible says in Luke 8:25, “He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they were afraid, and they marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that he commands even winds and water, and they obey him?”
